The Piña Colada
The Piña Colada, Spanish for "strained pineapple," is the official drink of Puerto Rico and the unofficial drink of summer, beach vacations, and tropical paradises everywhere. Made with rum, coconut, and pineapple, this flavorful cocktail, like many cocktails, has a disputed origin story that's as juicy as the cocktail itself.
By most accounts, the Piña Colada was created by Ramón "Monchito" Marrero ay the Caribe Hilton Hotel in Puerto Rico in 1954, making this classic cocktail over 65 years old. However, disputed accounts date the Piña Colada back to the 19th century, where it is said that Puerto Rican pirate Roberto Cofresi served it to his crew to celebrate.
Regardless of its origin, the Piña Colada remains a trendy cocktail experiencing a bit of a renaissance. Once relegated to frozen cocktail machines and poolside blender bars, cocktail enthusiasts are embracing this delicious mix of rum and juices by using fresh ingredients, high-quality cocktail mixers, and experimenting with unique recipe variations.
